
Daniyal Ali Khan, an independent filmmaker, graduated from Columbia College Chicago, US in Film and Video major with concentration in Direction and Cinematography. Daniyal has been head of the Media Sciences program at SZABIST; a pioneer in developing the four year Film and Video degree program at the Indus Valley School; and a faculty member at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA), where he designed both theory and practical courses for Film and Video. A strong advocator of Film discipline as part of the academics, he has been successful in introducing structured film courses teaching film format and camera/equipment at all schools that he has been involved with. As a speaker and facilitator, Daniyal has conducted several workshops and seminars in Filmmaking and Post Production, and Media Awareness with top schools and academies in Pakistan. He has also facilitated British High Commission Workshops ‘I Belong’ (2004) and ‘Channels of Change: Filmmaking for Social Change (2009). In collaboration with Kodak Ltd Pakistan, Daniyal organized a 10 day intensive hands on training workshop on 16MM filmmaking. Daniyal has led delegations, attended workshops and exchanged curriculums at JJ School of Applied Art, Mumbai; Communication Design Department, Film & Television Institute of India, Pune; Communication Design program and Film and Video Department, National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad; National School of Drama, Delhi; and A.J. Kidwai Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi. With his unparallel strengths in film academia and practice, Daniyal has the honor of being a jury member for the 3rd, 4th and 5th Kara International Film Festival. After launching the first Student Film Competition (2005), in collaboration with British High Commission and Iqra University, in 2008, Daniyal organized the first All Karachi Film Festival (2008) at SZABIST (Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology. Daniyal was also responsible for organizing the successful All Pakistan Inter-University Student Film Competition (2009). Daniyal’s written publications include ‘Reviving Fortunes of Cinema Art’ (Synergyzer, Volume 3, 2005), New Emerging Market for Filmmakers in Pakistan (Fuji International magazine, The Exposure, November 2008); and State-of-the-art facilities needed for 16MM and 35MM film format in The News (January 2009) and A Way Forward, Filmmaking Education in Pakistan (Synergyzer, Issue 4 | Volume 6 - 2009) Films in search of viewers (Herald publications 2010), Reviving a medium (South Asia, 2010), A job in Media (Express Tribune 2011), Global Bollywood (South Asia, 2011), He is presently working on a documentary, and writing a book on Film Tools, Techniques and Practices in Pakistan. The book is a comparative study of acquiring craft in the academics versus on the job training.
